A bodycon midi dress that looks tailored

This bodycon midi dress by Numoco has a sweetheart neckline, small cap sleeves and seams that follow the body from bust to hem. The maker uses a thicker stretch fabric, 95% polyester with 5% spandex, so the shape comes from the cut and the cloth together.

It ends around the knee: 94 cm long in S, 100 cm in XL. We sell it in powder pink, navy blue, beige and green.

The maker calls it a classic dress without embellishments, and that is accurate. There is no print, no belt and no ruffle. What you get is a neckline, a waist seam and a straight line down to the knee.

The four colours you can order are powder pink, navy blue, beige and green. On our colour buttons the green that is still available is called "green 2".

According to the supplier it is made in Poland.

Who it's for

For you if you want one dress that can go to a christening on Sunday and to a client meeting on Monday. The short sleeves cover the shoulders, the hem covers the knee when you stand, and the neckline is the only place where it shows some skin.

It is cut close. If you prefer room around the hips, this is not your dress, and we would rather say so here than after you have ordered.

The supplier does not describe the closure or say whether the dress is lined. The back view suggests a zip in the centre seam. If you need to be certain, ask us and we will check.

Fabric and feel: a thicker stretch fabric

The composition is 95% polyester and 5% spandex. The maker adds one useful detail: the material is thicker and stretchy. In a fitted dress that matters, because a thin jersey shows every line underneath and a thicker one smooths things over.

In the photos the fabric is matte and holds the seams sharply. It does not drape or cling the way a T-shirt fabric would. The supplier lists the weight of the dress at 450 grams.

Fit and silhouette: close from bust to knee

The size table is the same for all four colours. Size S has a chest of 80 cm, a waist of 66 cm and hips of 88 cm. Size L has 90, 74 and 96 cm. Length goes from 94 cm in S to 97 cm in M and L, and 100 cm in XL.

Choose by your hips first. The fabric stretches, but in a pencil shape the hips and thighs do the walking, and a size too small will ride up. If your waist and hips fall in different sizes, take the larger one.

Styling: one dress, office or party

The photos show it with heeled sandals, a small clutch and a short pendant that sits inside the neckline. That is the party version.

For the office, put a blazer over it and switch to closed pumps or flat slingbacks. The navy blue takes a camel coat well. The powder pink looks fresh with white sneakers and a trench on a spring day, which is a combination the maker probably did not have in mind but that works. A thin belt on the waist seam is possible; the dress has no loops, so pick one that stays in place.

Occasions

The maker lists birthdays, christenings, weddings, communions and ordinary working days. We agree with the range. It is formal enough for a ceremony and plain enough for a desk.

For a wedding, the beige is close to white in some light, so check the dress code or choose the green or navy blue. For a job interview, navy blue with a jacket is hard to get wrong.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no washing instructions, so follow the label sewn into the dress.

Two general habits for a stretch dress: wash it inside out so the surface stays smooth, and let it dry on a hanger so the seams fall straight. Close the zip before it goes into the machine.

The wow detail: a neckline with corners

Most sweetheart necklines hang from thin straps. This one is cut into a straight shoulder line, so the curve over the bust sits inside a square frame, with a cap sleeve on each corner. It gives the top of the dress something of a nineteen-fifties portrait. A short necklace fits exactly in the opening.
