A sleeveless ruffle-hem dress with two flounces and a slit

The top half of this ruffle-hem dress is plain: sleeveless, fitted, with a round neckline. All the movement is at the bottom, where two flounces run diagonally across the skirt and open into a high slit over one leg.

Moe designed and sewed it in Poland. It comes in seven colours and in sizes S to XL, with a length of 91.5 cm in S and 96 cm in XL.

The piece: a Moe cocktail dress in seven colours

Moe is a Polish label, and the supplier states that this dress was designed and sewn in Poland. The wholesaler files it under formal and cocktail dresses. Each colour has its own model number, from 209253 to 209259, with one shared size table.

The colour names on our buttons and in the supplier's list don't always match what the photos show, so here is the plain version. There are two greens: a strong emerald and a pale sage (our "green 2"). The supplier's brown is a mocha, our "taupe". "Peach" is a pale beige with a hint of pink. "Lavender" is a lilac pink, and the violet is a true violet. Then there is black.

Who it's for

For you if you want a party dress that covers the shoulders and chest and shows leg. The neckline is high and the straps are wide, so an ordinary bra works underneath.

The cut is fitted. The waist measures 74 cm in S and 89 cm in XL. The front of the hem is short where the ruffles open, so it suits you if you are comfortable with that.

Fabric and feel: polyester with 5% spandex

The composition is 95% polyester and 5% spandex. The supplier says leaving out the lining makes the dress light and comfortable to wear.

In the photos the fabric is smooth and matte, and it has body. You can see that in the flounces: they stand away from the leg in firm curves and don't hang limp. The maker gives no fabric weight. Because the dress is unlined, smooth underwear in a skin tone is the safe choice under the pale colours.

Fit and silhouette: fitted body, flared hem

The size table gives four measurements. Size S has a chest of 84 cm, a waist of 74 cm and hips of 96 cm. Each size adds five centimetres to all three, up to 99, 89 and 111 cm in XL. Length goes from 91.5 cm in S to 96 cm in XL.

That length is longer than the dress looks in the photos, where the front shows a lot of leg. The hem is asymmetric, so the figure is probably the longest point, at the back or the side. Pick the size that matches your chest and waist; the hips have room because the skirt flares.

Styling: simple shoes, bare neck

The photos keep it simple: strappy heeled sandals, a thin bracelet and loose hair. With this much going on at the hem, that is all the dress needs.

The high round neckline leaves no room for a necklace, so choose earrings. A short jacket that ends at the waist keeps the ruffles in view. In colder months the black and the emerald work with sheer tights and closed pumps.

Occasions

The supplier sells it as a cocktail dress. Wear it to a wedding as a guest, to a birthday party, a graduation or a summer drinks evening. The pale beige, sage and lilac pink are daytime colours; the black, violet and emerald are for the evening.

It is a dress for standing and dancing. When you sit, the slit opens, so cross your legs with that in mind.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no care instructions, so follow the label sewn into the dress.

For dresses with flounces in general: hang the dress to dry and smooth the ruffles with your hands while they are damp, so the edges dry in a clean curve.

The wow detail: the diagonal

The flounces don't run straight around the hem. They start high on one hip, sweep down across the front and curl open over the other leg. That one diagonal line turns a simple fitted dress into something that moves. From the back you see two neat tiers; from the front, a small cascade.
