An asymmetric dress that is short in front and long at the back

This asymmetric dress by Figl looks simple from the front: round neck, 3/4 sleeves, a clean A-line that ends above the knee. Then you turn around. The back is longer, curved, and set with pleats that open as you walk.

The fabric is 65% polyester and 35% viscose. It comes in peach, taupe and black, in six sizes from S to XXXL.

Figl files this as a cocktail dress and describes it in one line: an asymmetrical dress with 3/4 sleeves and an extended, pleated back. The supplier adds that it has no pockets.

The photos show how the back is built. Below the shoulder blades a seam runs across, and from that seam the fabric falls in pleats down to a rounded hem. From the side you see the hem rise from the back of the knee to the front of the thigh.

The supplier calls the colours pink, beige and black. In the photos the pink is a peach tone and the beige a grey-beige, which is why we sell them as peach and taupe.

Who it's for

For you if you want a neat dress that is easy around the waist and hips. The A-line falls free from the bust, so nothing is tight when you sit down to a long lunch.

It runs up to XXXL with a chest of 108 cm, and the shape is the same in every size. If you like your arms covered to below the elbow and your legs on show, this cut does both.

Fabric and feel: polyester with viscose

The dress is 65% polyester and 35% viscose. In the photos the fabric is matte and has enough body to hold the A-line and keep the pleats defined at the back.

The supplier gives no fabric weight and does not mention a lining or stretch.

Fit and silhouette: A-line, two lengths

The maker gives two length figures per size. In S they are 83.5 and 99.5 cm, in XXXL 86 and 102 cm. They are not labelled, but the dress is shorter in front than behind, so we read the first as the front and the second as the back.

Choose your size by the chest: 88 cm in S, 92 cm in M, 96 cm in L, 100 cm in XL, 104 cm in XXL and 108 cm in XXXL. The hip figure in the table starts at 140 cm, far more than any hip needs. That tells you how wide the skirt is, so your hips will not decide the size.

Styling: let the back do the talking

In the photos the dress is worn with black pointed heels with an ankle strap and no other accessories. The hair is tied back, which makes sense. Loose hair would cover the seam and the top of the pleats.

For the office, add opaque tights and block heels. For a party, the peach version is lovely with nude sandals and gold-tone earrings. A short jacket that ends at the waist keeps the pleats in view.

Occasions

The supplier calls it a dress for many occasions. We see it at a christening, a communion, a graduation, a work reception and a wedding in spring.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no care instructions, so go by the label sewn into the dress.

Pleats generally stay sharper when a dress hangs to dry and is stored on a hanger with room around it.

The wow detail: a back like a short cape

From the seam across the back the pleats hang free, a bit like the back of a swing coat. Standing still, they lie closed. Take a step and they fan out, and the rounded hem swings behind your knees. People will see this dress leave the room.
