A fitted wrap-neckline dress with sleeves that flutter

This wrap-neckline dress from Numoco does three things at once. The top crosses over into a V, a belt marks the waist, and the skirt follows the hips down to the knee, where a short slit lets you walk. The sleeves are short and loose, and they flare over the upper arm.

It comes in seven plain colours and in sizes XS to XXL. The fabric is 95% polyester with 5% spandex, and Numoco states that the dress is made in Poland.

The piece: seven colours of one Numoco dress

Each colour is a separate model at the maker. Six of them carry the same one-line description: a dress with an envelope neckline, short sleeves, a belt and a leg slit, in slightly stretchy fabric. The black one has a longer text and a name, Nina, and describes the same features.

We compared the size tables as well. Six colours share one table. The black dress has its own and is cut a little longer and roomier in the smaller sizes. You will find the details under fit.

Our old title called this a floral midi dress with ruffled sleeves. There is no print on any colour, and the sleeves are plain flutter sleeves, so we corrected it.

Who it's for

For you if you want a dress that defines the waist and covers the upper arms. The flutter sleeves hide the part many of us would rather not show, and the wrap top works for a small and for a fuller bust.

It is a fitted dress. The skirt sits close around hips and thighs, so it suits you if you like that. The range is wide for an occasion dress: XS to XXL, with a chest of 110 cm in the largest size.

The maker's data does not mention a zip or a lining. Ask us before you order if you need to know, and we will check with the supplier.

Fabric and feel: smooth and slightly stretchy

The composition is 95% polyester and 5% spandex. The maker calls the fabric slightly stretchy, and for the black dress adds that it is pleasant to the touch. In the photos it is smooth and matte, with enough body to hold the pleats of the wrap and to keep the skirt from clinging.

The colours are saturated and even. The bottle green and the raspberry are the ones that photograph deepest. A fabric like this does not crease much, which matters in a dress you will sit in through a long dinner.

Fit and silhouette: check which table applies

The table below is for the green dress, and the navy, raspberry, red, beige and light blue use the same numbers. Size M has a chest of 86 cm, a waist of 76 cm and hips of 94 cm, and is 97 cm long. XL jumps to a chest of 100 cm and XXL to 110 cm.

The black dress is different. It comes in XS to XL only. Its size M has a chest of 90 cm, a waist of 76 cm and hips of 98 cm, and is 99 cm long. In black, XL is 101 cm long with a chest of 100 cm.

One oddity: for the light blue dress the maker's table lists size L with the same numbers as M. That looks like a typing error at the supplier, so for light blue in L, go by the L row of the table below. The tables don't say how the dress was measured. The numbers are small for body measurements, so compare with a fitted stretch dress you own.

Styling: heels and a small bag

The model wears strappy heels, a watch and a small clutch, and leaves the neck almost bare. With a wrap neckline that is the right call. A fine pendant is the most it needs.

For the office, the navy and the black work with a blazer and closed pumps. For a wedding, the light blue and the raspberry come into their own with nude sandals. In winter, add sheer tights and a short jacket that ends at the belt.

Occasions

The wholesaler files it under formal and cocktail dresses, and the maker suggests special occasions. Think of a wedding as a guest, a christening, a graduation, a work dinner or a Christmas party.

It ends at the knee, which makes it right for daytime events and cocktail invitations. For black tie you would want something longer.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no care instructions, so follow the label sewn into the dress.

If the belt comes off, take it off before washing and wash it in a laundry bag, or it will wrap itself around everything else. Hang the dress to dry on a hanger so the sleeves fall back into shape.

The wow detail: the sleeves

Everything else on this dress is close to the body. The sleeves are the opposite. They are cut wide and short, so they lift when you raise your arm and settle when you lower it. That bit of movement softens a sharp, fitted dress, and it is why it photographs so well from the side.
