A short cocktail dress with ruffle sleeves and a skirt that spins

This is a short cocktail dress with ruffle sleeves by Bicotone. The bodice crosses over into a V, the waist is marked by a wide band, and the skirt is cut so full that it fans out when you turn.

It is plain, in one colour, and lined. Right now you can order it in red and in black. The maker's size table gives a length of 88 cm in size 34 and 91 cm in size 40, which ends above the knee on the model.

The piece: a Bicotone cocktail dress, colour by colour

Bicotone sells through a Polish fashion wholesaler, which files this dress under cocktail dresses. Every colour has its own model number. The supplier describes all of them the same way: a girlish, slightly flared model with ruffles on the sleeves, fastened with a covered zipper and lined.

Our gallery shows eight colours, from dusty pink to cobalt blue. Only two of them are in stock at the supplier today, red and black, so those are the options you can choose. We leave the other photos up because they show the cut from more angles.

An older title called this a two-tone floral dress. It is neither. Each dress is one solid colour.

Who it's for

For you if you like a dress with a waist. This cut puts all the attention there: ruffles above, volume below, a smooth band in between.

It suits you if you want to dance. The skirt has room for it. Sizes run from 34 to 40, with a waist of 66 cm in 34 and 78 cm in 40.

Closer look: what the photos and the maker's data show

  • Ruffles on the sleeves (maker's data), in two layers that stand out from the shoulder (photos)
  • Crossover V-neckline with soft pleats (photos)
  • Wide waistband; the maker says the cut emphasises the waist
  • Slightly flared, full skirt (maker's data and photos)
  • Covered zip (maker's data)
  • Lined (maker's data)
  • Small round metal tag below the waistband (photos)
  • Hem above the knee on the model, 88 to 91 cm long depending on size (size table)

Fabric and feel: viscose blend with a lining

The composition is 70% viscose and 30% polyester, and the supplier states that the dress is lined. It does not say what the lining is made of.

In the photos the fabric is smooth and matte with a slight sheen in strong light. It has enough weight to make the skirt swing out in a clean circle and enough body to hold the ruffles up. The pleats of the bodice lie flat, which tells you the fabric is not stiff.

Fit and silhouette: fitted waist, full skirt

The dress is fitted through the chest and waist and free from there down. The table below comes from the maker. Size 36 has a chest of 90 cm and a waist of 70 cm; size 40 has 98 and 78 cm. The length grows by one centimetre per size, from 88 to 91 cm.

The table does not say whether these are garment or body measurements. Measure a fitted dress you own across the chest and the waist, double both and compare. The hips don't matter here, the skirt is wide enough for anyone.

Size chart (cm)

Size Length Chest Waist
34 88 86 66
36 89 90 70
38 90 94 74
40 91 98 78

Styling: red or black, two moods

In the photos the red is worn with black strappy sandals and gold-tone earrings, the black with black pumps and a fine necklace. Both work because the dress already has shape at the shoulder; big jewellery would compete with the ruffles.

For the red, keep everything else dark or nude. For the black, a red lip or a coloured bag is all it needs. Wear your hair back if you can, so the sleeves show.

Occasions

The supplier calls it a cocktail dress, and that fits. Wear it to a wedding party, a birthday, a Christmas dinner or a date. The red is a good December dress and the black goes anywhere a little black dress goes.

It is short and the neckline is a real V, so for a conservative office party you may want a blazer over it.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data we receive has no care instructions, so please go by the label sewn into the dress. We would rather tell you that than guess.

One general habit for dresses with ruffles: hang them on a hanger with some space, so the ruffles are not pressed flat between other clothes.

The wow detail: the spin

Several photos catch the model mid-turn, and you can see why the photographer asked for it. The skirt lifts into an almost flat circle and settles back in deep folds. Standing still it is a neat A-line. Moving, it is a different dress. If you buy a dress to dance in, this is the part you are paying for.
