Materials and build: leather, by the supplier's account

The material line says cowhide leather. The supplier does not say which grade, how it was tanned or whether the strap is one layer or two. In the photos the surface is smooth with a soft sheen.

Leather softens and takes on the curve of your waist as you wear it, and it will show marks at the hole you use most. That is normal for the material.

Size and dimensions: 100.1 cm, one size

The supplier gives one figure: a length of 100.1 cm, converted from 39.4 inches. It does not say whether that includes the buckle, and it gives no width. In the photos the strap looks about two fingers wide.

With five holes there is some range, but this is not a belt for every waist. If 100.1 cm is longer than you need, a cobbler can add a hole.

Styling: through the loops or over a dress

Wear it through the loops of straight jeans with a tucked-in shirt and the buckle becomes the centre of the outfit. Over a blazer or a knit dress it marks the waist.

Black with gold tones is the dressiest. The lighter brown suits blue jeans and cream; the coffee brown sits well with olive, camel and navy.

Care: no instructions from the supplier

The supplier gives no care instructions. Our own advice for a leather belt: keep it dry, wipe it with a soft cloth, and hang it or roll it loosely instead of folding it.
