A garden tool set that stays together

This garden tool set has five pieces in a carry case: two hand shovels, a small rake, pruning scissors and a spray bottle. Each tool has its own place in the case, so nothing rattles and nothing goes missing in the shed.

The case measures 29 x 19 x 7 cm. You choose green, or purple with floral handles.

The two shovels differ: one is wide, for scooping soil, and one is narrow, for planting and transplanting. The rake has three prongs for loosening the top layer. The pruning scissors have a spring between the handles, and the spray bottle has a trigger.

The old name called this set "camouflage". In the photos the green set is plain green with black tool heads, and the purple set has a floral print on the handles, so we dropped that word. There is no brand in the supplier data.

Who it's for

For balcony gardeners, people with a small city garden and anyone who looks after house plants. These are hand tools for pots, planters and borders, the jobs you do kneeling or at a table. For digging over a vegetable plot you need bigger tools.

The first purple photo shows a larger set with ten tools. That is a different version. The set on this page has five pieces.

Materials: stainless steel and plastic

The supplier lists stainless steel and plastic and describes the surface as rust-proof. It does not say which parts are steel. In the photos the tool heads of the green set are black, which points to a coating, and those of the purple set are pale and silver in colour. The case and the bottle look like plastic.

Size: a case of 29 x 19 x 7 cm

The only measurement from the supplier is the case: 29 x 19 x 7 cm. The tools fit inside it, so the shovels are shorter than 29 cm, handle included. That makes this a compact hand set. The supplier gives no bottle volume.

How to use it

Use the wide shovel to fill pots, the narrow one to make planting holes, and the rake to loosen soil between plants. The scissors are for dead flowers and thin stems; thick branches need loppers. Mist seedlings and leaves with the bottle.

Good moments to give it

For a housewarming with a first balcony, for Mother's or Father's Day, or for someone who has just been given an allotment. The case makes it look like a proper gift without wrapping.

Care: clean and dry before closing the case

The supplier gives no care instructions. As general practice for garden tools, knock or rinse the soil off, dry the tools and only then put them back in the case. A drop of oil on the pivot of the scissors keeps them moving.

Loose garden tools end up in a bucket, under a bench or in the wrong shed. Here each one clicks into a shaped recess, and when a slot is empty you see at once what is still lying in the border.
