This slouchy beanie from BE Knit sits snug at the forehead and hangs loose at the back. The knit has a pebbly texture, so even in a plain colour it has something to look at. The yarn is 100% acrylic and there is one size.

Our earlier title called this a beanie and snood set. The maker lists it as a hat and writes that you can create a set with a wide scarf or a snood. That is a styling tip. It is not a promise that the snood comes with it, and the wholesaler ships the hat alone.

BE Knit makes it as model 136400 in beige, 136401 in grey and 136402 in black. The beige is a warm camel in the photos; our button calls it "beige 2".

Who it's for

For you if close-fitting hats do not suit you or are hard on your hair. A slouchy shape leaves room at the back for a bun or thick hair, and it does not press everything flat.

Materials and build: acrylic knit

The hat is 100% acrylic. Acrylic yarn is light and soft, and it holds dye evenly, which shows in the flat, clear colours of the photos. The maker gives no lining and we see none.

The stitch has a raised, grainy surface, a little like moss stitch. It makes the hat look thicker than a plain rib. We have no data on how warm it is, so we leave that to your own judgement of a medium knit.

Size and fit

There is one size and the maker gives no measurements. The knit stretches, and the extra length at the back is what creates the slouch. On the model the edge sits just above the eyebrows.

Styling: with a scarf in the same tone

The maker suggests a wide scarf or a snood with it, and the photos show how good the same colour looks at the neck. If you own a scarf in camel, grey or black, you have your set already.

The camel works with navy and cream coats. Grey and black go with everything. Push the hat back a little so some hair shows at the front.

Occasions

It is an everyday hat for the colder months: cycling, walking the dog, the school run, a weekend in the city. It folds flat into a coat pocket.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no care instructions, so follow the label sewn into the hat. Acrylic knits in general wash cool and dry flat, and they lose their shape in a hot dryer.

The wow detail: the texture

Up close the knit looks like tiny pebbles in rows. It catches the light differently from a smooth knit, so the black hat is not a flat black and the camel has highs and lows. It is a quiet detail, and it is the reason the hat does not need a pompom or a label on the front.
