A wool blend hooded balaclava scarf: hat and neck warmer in one piece

This is the piece for the days when a hat is not enough and a scarf keeps coming loose. Awama knitted a hood and a neck warmer as one, so there is no gap between the two where the wind gets in.

Two drawstrings at the front let you decide how close it sits. The yarn holds 22% wool and 16% mohair, next to 40% acrylic and 22% polyamide. It is made in Poland, comes in one size, and is available in dark brown.

The piece: model 220836 by Awama

The supplier describes it as a balaclava that combines the comfort of a hat with the function of a neck gaiter. It says the piece was made in a Polish knitting factory from soft, light and very warm yarn, a blend with wool and kid mohair.

The photos show a hood with a slightly pointed top and a wide neck part. Pulled down, the neck part lies in folds over the collar of your coat. Left loose, the whole thing frames the face like a hood on a jumper would.

The gallery still shows a grey-brown version. It is no longer available from the maker, so the dark brown is the one we can send you.

Who it's for

For you if you cycle, walk the dog or stand along a sports field in winter and want your ears, neck and the top of your chest covered by one thing. You put it on once and you are done.

It is also for anyone whose coat has no hood. This adds one, and you can take it off indoors without carrying half a wardrobe.

Closer look: what the maker's data and the photos show

  • Hood and neck warmer knitted as one piece (maker's data)
  • Drawstrings that take it from a loose hood to a close fit against the wind (maker's data)
  • Two thin cords that come out at the front of the neck (photos)
  • Fine knit with a slightly fuzzy surface (photos)
  • Soft, light yarn with wool and kid mohair (maker's data)
  • Made in Poland (maker's data)

The maker gives no measurements for the hood or the neck opening.

Fabric and feel: 22% wool, 16% mohair

The composition is 40% acrylic, 22% polyamide, 22% wool and 16% mohair. So a little over a third of the yarn is animal fibre and the rest is synthetic. We say that plainly because the word wool in a title can suggest more.

Mohair is the fibre that gives the knit its soft haze; you can see it in the close-ups as a fine fuzz on the surface. The maker calls the yarn soft, light and very warm. Mohair and wool can tickle on sensitive skin, and this piece sits against your cheeks and neck, so keep that in mind if you know you react to either.

Size: one size, set with the drawstrings

There is one size, and the supplier lists no measurements. The fit is something you set yourself. Leave the cords loose and it hangs like a roomy hood with space for a bun or a ponytail. Pull them and the opening closes around your face, which the maker describes as a tight wind protection.

On the model the neck part reaches the collarbone and tucks into a coat without bunching.

Styling: under a coat or over a jumper

The photos show it with a brown tailored coat, the neck part tucked inside the lapels. Tone on tone looks calm, and dark brown also sits well next to camel, cream and black.

Over a chunky jumper you can wear the neck part outside, like a cowl, and push the hood back when you step indoors. With a puffer jacket it replaces both hat and scarf, which keeps the collar area less crowded.

Where it earns its place

The maker suggests everyday wear and trips. We would add the bike commute, a winter market and any walk along the coast where a loose scarf turns into a sail.

It folds flat, so it fits in a coat pocket or a bag for the moment the weather turns.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no care instructions, so follow the label sewn into the balaclava.

A general habit for knits with wool and mohair: wash rarely, air it after wearing and dry it flat. Hanging a wet knit stretches it.

The wow detail: two cords, two looks

The drawstrings do more than close the hood. Loose, the piece reads as a soft hood with a draped collar. Pulled, the neck part gathers into deep folds and the hood hugs the face. Same piece, and you switch between the two at the bus stop with one hand.
