An ice ball mold for a whole tray of round ice

This ice ball mold makes small round balls of ice instead of cubes, a whole tray at a time. It has two parts: a tray with half-round cups and a lid with matching domes. Fill it, freeze it, and you get 18 or 33 balls, depending on the size you pick.

The supplier makes it in PP, in peach or light blue. The 18-ball tray measures 12cm by 26cm.

Each dome on the lid has a small hole at the top. In the photos the tray stands on short feet, and the 18-ball version has a small handle at each short end. The lid sits inside the rim of the tray, so the two halves of each ball line up.

Material: PP

The supplier lists PP, short for polypropylene, a rigid material that is common in food containers. The supplier does not give a food-contact certificate, a temperature range or a dishwasher statement, so we don't claim any of those.

Because the tray is rigid, the balls come out by twisting it gently or running a little water over the back, the way you would with a classic ice cube tray.

Size: check your freezer drawer

The 18-ball tray is 12cm wide and 26cm long in the supplier's measurement photos, which fits most freezer drawers lengthwise. The supplier gives no measurements for the 33-ball tray; in the photos it is clearly wider. The diameter of the balls is not given either. They are small balls, several to a drink.

Ideas: more than water

Freeze a mint leaf, a berry or a sliver of lemon peel inside each ball. Make coffee balls for iced coffee that does not water down. The supplier also suggests ice cream, gelatin and small desserts.

Occasions

A summer barbecue, a birthday, New Year's Eve drinks, or an ordinary Tuesday with a jug of water on the table.

Care: wash by hand to be safe

The supplier gives no care instructions. Without a dishwasher statement we would wash it by hand in warm soapy water and rinse it well before first use. Let both parts dry before you stack them.
