Alternatives to About You for Jewellery: What to Check

Alternatives to About You for Jewellery: What to Check

Use this clear actionable checklist every time you shop for jewellery and accessories.

Check material details first

When you are looking at any jewellery or accessory, stop scrolling before you add anything to basket. Open the full product description first.

Where the maker provides it, the product page will list exactly what each piece is made from. Do not guess from photos. For earrings, check what metal is used for the post and clasp, not just the decorative front. For necklaces, check the chain material as well as the pendant. For bags and belts, check every part including lining and hardware.

You do not need to memorise material types. Just note what you already know works for you. If you find certain metals irritate your skin, write that down and cross check every time. If you prefer pieces that hold their shape without extra care, note that too.

Every piece will wear differently. You do not need anyone else to tell you what is good. You only need to know it will work for your life, your habits and how you like things to feel. Browse our full range at Jewelry & Accessories.

Get sizing right every time

Nothing wastes your time and money more than a piece that does not fit right. A bracelet that slides off your wrist. A necklace that sits too high or too low. A bag strap that digs into your shoulder.

Many people skip checking measurements. Instead they guess, or rely on one word descriptions like ‘small’ or ‘long’. Do not do this.

Take one piece you already own and like the fit of. Lay it flat, measure it with a regular ruler, and keep that note on your phone. When you look at a new piece, compare that measurement to the ones given on the product page.

This works for every single accessory. It takes 30 seconds, and will stop almost all disappointed deliveries. Use our Size guide if you are unsure how to measure correctly. You can also save your own measurements once in your account, to show alongside every product you view.

Calculate price per wear

This is the single most useful check you can do before buying anything. It works for every single piece, no exceptions.

It is very simple. Take the price of the item. Divide it by the number of times you realistically think you will wear it. That is the actual cost of this piece, each time you use it.

For example: a €12 necklace you wear twice will cost you €6 per wear. A €40 necklace you wear 80 times will cost you 50 cent per wear.

You will very quickly see that the cheaper looking option is very often the more expensive one. This calculation removes all the noise from sale banners, trend posts and product photos. It only asks one useful question: will this earn its place in your life?

Do this check every single time. You will buy far fewer things you regret.

Read care instructions before you order

Many people only read care instructions after something breaks or tarnishes. By then it is too late.

Every piece has limits. Some jewellery will tarnish if you wear it in the shower. Some bag fabrics will mark if they get rained on. Some belts will crack if you fold them away wrong. None of this is a flaw. It is just how materials work.

Before you buy, check what care the piece needs. Ask yourself honestly if you will actually do that. If you will never remember to take earrings off before showering, do not buy a piece that requires you do that. If you will not have time to polish something once a month, pick one that does not need it.

You can find general guidance for common materials in our Fabric care guide.

Check delivery and return terms

Always check the store policies before you enter payment details. This is not rude, it is sensible.

You should know exactly what you agree to when you order. Do not assume all stores work the same way. Check when orders are dispatched, what happens if a piece arrives damaged, and what the rules are if you change your mind.

You can read our full shipping terms at Shipping and return terms at Returns. No fine print. Everything is written in plain language.

If something is not clear, ask. Any good store will answer your questions before you buy, not after. Never feel pressured to complete an order before you have all the information you need.

Tools to help you choose

When you shop with us, you get tools built to help you buy better, not just buy more.

Open the Magic Mirror on any jewellery product page to try the piece on your avatar. You can see exactly how it sits, how it looks with different necklines and what scale it is, before you order.

If you are not sure what will work with pieces you already own, open the Mix & Match Studio. You can pull in items from your Virtual Closet, try different combinations and save drafts for later.

You can also message Lucy at any time. She will show you pieces that fit your existing wardrobe, your habits and what you actually like. She will never suggest something just because it is new.

You will find Fine Jewelry, Sculpted Earrings and Women's Accessories all ready to preview.

5% of each sale goes to a cause you choose.

How giving works when you shop with us

5% of each sale goes to a cause you choose. After your order you pick one of three causes: CARE International, Cool Earth or Project Zero. The donation is paid out through PayPal Giving Fund UK. Those three causes, together with how we run our own store (honest product data, fair prices), are matched to 11 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

That is the heart of the 1% Movement: small choices × millions of us = change. It is a giving promise we can show you, and it is the only promise we make on this page.

Questions people ask

Can I try jewellery on before I buy?

You can use our Magic Mirror tool to try any jewellery piece on your personal avatar. This lets you check scale, placement and how it looks against different skin tones. We do not operate physical shops.

How do I know if a necklace will be the right length?

Measure a necklace you already own and like the fit of. Compare that measurement to the dimensions listed on the product page. You can also use our size guide for standard necklace length reference.

Do you have the same range of pieces as About You?

We carry a smaller, curated range of jewellery and accessories. We build our collections around pieces that work well together, rather than carrying every possible trend item.

Can I save items I am thinking about buying?

You can save items to your Virtual Closet. You can also build draft outfits in the Mix & Match Studio, and come back to them any time. There is no limit to how many items you can save.

What should I do if a piece tarnishes?

Follow the care instructions that came with your item. General guidance for cleaning common metals is also available in our fabric and material care guide.
