What to wear to Dutch Design Week 2026: three looks, one rule, nine days on foot in Eindhoven
Dutch Design Week is nine days on foot between venues spread across Eindhoven, many of them in former factory buildings. Here is one rule that dresses you for it, three looks built from pieces that are in stock today, and the honest version of shopping sustainably in the city while you are there.
Dutch Design Week runs from 17 to 25 October across Eindhoven. Nine days, venues from Strijp-S to the city centre, and this year's theme is R.A.W., which the organisers spell out as Rebel Authentic Worth: a return to the unpolished, the exploratory and the experimental. The programme, the map and the tickets live on ddw.nl. We are a shop, not the festival, so go there for what is on and come back here for what to wear to it.
It is a difficult brief to dress for, because the instinct at a design festival is to arrive finished. Don't. You will walk between venues all day, a good number of them have concrete floors, and October in Brabant does what it likes.
So here is the rule that solves it, and three looks built on it from things that are in stock as we publish.
The rule: the sandwich
Your top and your shoes agree. Your middle disagrees.
That's it. Match the colour at your shoulders to the colour on your feet, and let the bottom half be the thing that argues. It works because the eye reads the two ends as a frame and the middle as the picture, so a plain outfit gets structure and a loud middle gets permission.
It is also the most forgiving rule to walk in, because it asks nothing of the shoes beyond a colour. You can wear the sensible ones. At a nine-day festival you should.

Look one: the concrete-floor look

The black knit under the jacket and the black loafers are the same register: hard, dark, a little surface texture. The cream linen in between is the argument, and the burgundy jacket sits over the top of the sandwich without breaking it. Cropped trousers and a slip-on shoe also mean you are not fighting a hem all day on a factory floor. This is the one for the busiest day.
Look two: the long-walk look

Pink knit at the top, beige sole at the bottom, and a wide camel stripe doing the disagreeing. The cardigan is the point: it comes off in an overheated exhibition hall and goes back on in the queue outside, and most things at Dutch Design Week involve a queue outside. The trousers are wide and light, which is what you want for the walk from Strijp-S into town and back.
Look three: the evening-programme look

Crochet and cow-print are both texture-forward, which is what ties the ends together, and the plain hot-pink midi is the one loud thing, on purpose. This is the one that survives from an afternoon at Strijp-S into whatever the evening turns into.
What R.A.W. asks of you
Rebel Authentic Worth, in the organisers' words, is about the unpolished and the experimental: the working shown, the material still recognisable as material. The dressing equivalent is not scruffiness. It is letting one thing be obviously what it is: linen that creases, suede that marks, knit that pills. Each of the three looks above has exactly one of those in it, on purpose.
The opposite, the outfit that looks as if it has never been sat down in, reads as the wrong answer at a festival about honesty in making.
Practical, unglamorous, true
- You will walk. The venues run from Strijp-S to the city centre and out again. Plan for a long day on your feet and check the map on ddw.nl before you pick a shoe.
- Layers over coats. Halls are warm, October evenings are not, and cloakrooms are not a given.
- Nothing that needs a mirror. You will not find one.
Shopping sustainably in Eindhoven, the honest version
We are an online store based in Amsterdam, so we will not pretend to be an Eindhoven shop. Two things are true instead. First, the city has a real second-hand and repair scene, and the people who know it well have already written it up: the city's own guide lists its sustainable initiatives (a weekly sustainable market on Wilhelminaplein, eight Repair Cafés, vintage and remake studios) and its thrift stores, and COSH! maps the sustainable shops street by street. Go there for addresses and opening hours; we would only be copying them.
Second, the most sustainable thing you can do for a festival week is buy fewer pieces and wear them nine days running. That is what the three looks above are for. Each is built to survive concrete floors, a full day on foot and an October evening, and each piece is a real product with a real price, not a rendering of something we would have to source later.
