These biker boots with buckles by Step In Style don't do subtle. Straps wrap the shaft from the ankle up, each with its own metal buckle, above a chunky sole and a 5 cm block heel.

The shaft is 28 cm high, which puts the top at mid-calf. The upper is faux leather, and a zip helps you in. Sizes run from 36 to 41, in black or brown.

The wholesaler lists the black pair as model 217748 and the brown pair as model 217749. The maker describes boots with a mid-calf shaft, a slip-on model with an additional zipper, a stable block heel and decorative straps with buckles.

The supplier's catalogue puts them in the thigh-high category and an earlier version of this page repeated that. It is wrong. A 28 cm shaft ends at the calf, as the photos show.

In the photos we count four straps around the shaft and a fifth across the ankle, studded with metal eyelets. The zip runs down the outer side and there is a pull loop at the back.

Who they're for

For you if your wardrobe is mostly plain and you want one loud thing at the bottom. These boots carry an outfit on their own.

They suit you less if you want something light. Five straps, metal buckles and a thick sole add up, and you will feel that you are wearing boots.

The maker calls the straps decorative. Whether the buckles can also be tightened is not stated.

Materials and build: faux leather on a block heel

The upper is artificial leather, smooth with a soft sheen in the photos. The brown is a dark, reddish brown that makes the silver-tone buckles stand out more than they do on the black.

For the lining and the footbed the wholesaler's attribute lines contain a phrase that looks like a translation error, so we treat both as not stated. The maker suggests the boots for cooler days and promises nothing about warmth or rain. We leave it at that.

Size and dimensions: 28 cm shaft, 5 cm heel

The size table gives the insole length: 23.5 cm for size 36, 24 for 37, 24.5 for 38 and 25 for 39. Then it jumps to 26 cm for size 40 and 26.5 cm for 41. If you usually wear 39 or 40, measure your foot and choose by the number.

The shaft is 28 cm high and the heel 5 cm. On the model the top of the boot sits at mid-calf with some room around the leg, so trousers or thick socks can go inside.

Styling: keep the rest simple

In the photos the boots are worn with bare legs and a short skirt, which shows every strap. With black tights and a knitted dress you get the same effect in winter.

Slim jeans or leggings tucked into the shaft work too. Wide trousers would cover the buckles, and then you have paid for hardware nobody sees. One busy piece per outfit is enough, so pick plain colours above the knee.

Occasions

The maker suggests everyday outfits on cooler days. We see them at concerts, at festivals in the shoulder season and on city weekends. The 5 cm block heel is manageable for hours of standing.

For a strict office they are probably too much. For a creative one they are fine.

The maker's data has no care instructions. If there is a leaflet or label in the box, follow that first.

As a general habit with faux leather, wipe the upper and the straps with a soft damp cloth and dry them afterwards. Dirt collects under the straps and in the tread of the sole, so an old toothbrush is useful there.
