Speedy Tail Interactive Cat Toy Ball, Two Speeds, USB Rechargeable

An interactive cat toy ball with a tail

This interactive cat toy is a small ball that rolls on its own, turns away when it bumps into something, and drags a green tail behind it. It has two speeds, a built-in 150 mAh battery for 120 minutes of play, and it charges by USB.

It measures 50 x 50 x 50 mm and comes in blue or orange. It is sold without a brand.

At a glance

The piece: a ball that plays back

According to the supplier the ball rolls through 360 degrees and changes direction by itself when it meets an obstacle, so it doesn't get stuck under the first chair. A press on the power button switches between the two speeds. The tail gives your cat something to grab.

The supplier's instruction photo describes two modes. In normal mode a green light comes on for 3 seconds and the ball switches off after 5 minutes. In intelligent mode the light is blue, the ball rests after every five minutes, and it starts again when your cat touches it.

Who it's for

For indoor cats with energy to burn, and for owners who work from home and need ten quiet minutes. It is small, so it suits kittens as well as grown cats. The photos also show it with a puppy, but the supplier describes it as a cat toy, and for a dog that chews we would pick something else.

Closer look: the facts

• USB charging with a Type-C cable in the package; full in 10-20 minutes according to the photo text (supplier, photos)

• Motor speed 12000 rpm (supplier photo text)

Materials and build

The supplier describes a smooth plastic surface that wipes clean with a damp cloth. In the photos the ball has a ridged pattern and a cap that comes off to reach the switch and the charging port. The supplier does not say what the tail is made of.

Size and battery

At 50 x 50 x 50 mm the ball is a bit smaller than a tennis ball, small enough to roll under most sofas, so block the gap if you don't want to fish it out. The 150 mAh battery gives 120 minutes of active play according to the supplier. With the 5-minute sessions of normal mode, one charge covers many rounds.

Play ideas

Start on the slower speed so a shy cat can get used to it. Hard floors work well; on deep carpet a small ball has a harder time. Put it away between sessions and bring it out as a treat. A toy that appears now and then stays interesting.

Occasions

A new kitten in the house, a rainy week indoors, or a present for the cat at Sinterklaas. It is also a thoughtful gift for a friend whose cat is home alone during the day.

Care and safe play

Wipe the surface with a damp cloth, as the supplier advises, and keep the ball out of water because of the battery. Check the tail now and then, and take the toy away if it is chewed or damaged. Charge it where you can see it, and unplug it when it is full.

The wow detail: it wakes up when touched

In intelligent mode the ball goes quiet after a few minutes and waits. One tap from a paw and it is off again. Your cat decides when the game starts, which is how cats like it.
