This embroidered balconette bra by Gorteks is a soft bra in beige with three-piece cups. The cups are made of semi-transparent embroidery with a fine floral pattern, and a small bow with zirconia sits between them.

In the photos the embroidery is tone on tone, beige on beige, so the pattern shows as texture more than as colour.

The maker's text does not say whether the cups have underwires. We don't want to read that from a photo, so ask us if it decides your choice.

Fabric and feel: polyamide embroidery with stretch

The composition is 70% polyamide, 25% polyester and 5% spandex. Polyamide is the usual base for fine lingerie fabrics because it is smooth and light. The spandex gives the band and the tulle backing their stretch.

Semi-transparent means what it says. The embroidery covers, and the ground between the flowers lets some skin tone through. In beige that effect is quiet, and under a light blouse the bra will show less than a white one would.

Fit and silhouette: find your row in the chart

The chart below has a row for every size the maker lists. Each row gives two body measurements: the underbust, measured snugly under the bust, and the chest, measured around the fullest part. A 75D, for example, is for an underbust of 73-77 cm and a chest of 93-95 cm.

Measure both, find the band that matches your underbust and then the cup whose chest range includes your second number. A balconette cup is cut lower and wider than a full cup, with the straps set towards the shoulders. The side boning keeps the band flat against the body.

Styling: under light colours and wide necklines

Beige is the colour that disappears under white and pastel tops, so this is the bra for your light shirts. The wide-set straps suit square and boat necklines, where straps closer to the neck would peek out.

In the photos both models wear matching beige briefs. Those are a separate item. Any smooth beige or skin-tone brief will make a set of it.

Occasions

This is a bra for ordinary days that happens to be pretty. Wear it to work and on days out. The bow and the embroidery are flat enough to stay invisible under most fabrics, though a thin, tight jersey top will show the texture.

Care: follow the label

As a general habit, bras keep their shape longer when you close the hooks, wash them in a mesh bag or by hand, and let them dry flat. Heat from a dryer wears out elastic fibres quickly.
