The cut is simple. Two thin straps, a softly rounded V neckline, a body that skims the bust and waist, and a skirt part that opens up so you can walk. The straps are the same colour as the slip. Shorten them and the neckline sits higher; lengthen them and it drops.

The maker finishes the edges with a thin trim and packs the slip in what it calls an elegant two-piece package, a large box meant for giving.

Fabric and feel: glossy satin

Satin is a weave, and what it is woven from differs. For the brown slip the maker gives a composition: 97% polyester and 3% spandex. For black, red and white the data only says satin, with no percentages. We expect the same fabric across the colours, but we cannot confirm it, so check the label if the fibre matters to you.

The maker describes the satin as full-bodied, with some give in the right directions. In the photos it falls in long vertical folds and reflects the light on the hips and bust.

Fit and silhouette: close at the bust, loose at the hem

The size table gives body measurements in ranges. Size M is for a chest of 90 to 94 cm, a waist of 70 to 74 cm and hips of 96 to 100 cm. Size XL is for 100 to 104, 80 to 84 and 106 to 110 cm. Choose by your chest first; the skirt part is wide enough to forgive a few centimetres at the hips.

One oddity in the maker's data: the length is listed as 100 cm for black and 89 cm for red and white, the same in every size. For brown no length is given. In the photos all four end around mid-calf. If length is important to you, count on the lower figure for red and white.

Styling: at home, with something over it

In the photos the slip is styled with black heels and a bead necklace, which is a photographer's idea of bedtime. At home you will more likely wear it with a dressing gown or a long cardigan and bare feet.

Adjust the straps before anything else. Set them so the neckline lies flat against the chest, and the rest of the slip falls into place.
