Material: silicone, with one gap

The supplier describes the mold as silicone that releases and cleans easily. Baking is listed as one of the uses, but there is no food-contact statement and no temperature range in the supplier data. For soap and candles that does not matter. If you want to use it in the oven or for chocolate, ask us first and we will request the details.

Size: think guest soap

At 5.8 cm across and 3.4 cm high the mold fits in the palm of your hand. The flower that comes out is a little smaller than that. It makes one piece at a time, so for a batch of ten you either need patience or more than one mold.

Ideas for colour

The supplier shows a cream flower and a soft pink one. Both look good. You could also pour white soap with a few dried lavender buds, or a deep red candle for December. Dusting the mold with a little mica powder before pouring gives the petal edges a shimmer.

What to make with it

Make guest soaps for the bathroom, floating candles for a dinner table or small favours for a baby shower. A few flower soaps in a paper bag is a kind present for Mother's Day that costs you an afternoon.

Care

The supplier gives no care instructions beyond easy cleaning. As general practice for silicone molds, wash with warm water and washing-up liquid, let it dry fully and store it flat so the shape does not bend. Keep one mold for food and another for soap or wax; do not mix the two.

Look at the finished flowers in the first photo. Every petal has its own edge and the centre curls inward like a real bloom. You get that from a mold the size of an espresso cup, and peeling the silicone back for the first time is a small thrill.
