The piece: models 212247 to 212249

The supplier describes a dress with a fitted cut, short sleeves, a boat neckline with a subtle slit and a hidden zip, suited to everyday wear and to dressier outings. Each colour has its own model number and the same size table.

In the photos the dress is plain, without a print. Vertical seams run from the bust to the hip, front and back, and shape the dress to the body. The skirt is straight and narrow, with a slit at the centre of the back hem so you can walk.

The colour the supplier calls beige is a camel tone in the photos. We list it as taupe.

Who it's for

For you if you want one dress that replaces a suit. It covers the shoulders and the knees, it needs no ironing of collars, and it looks finished with nothing more than shoes.

The cut follows the body from bust to knee. The table gives a waist of 74 cm and hips of 100 cm in size M, so it suits a figure with some difference between the two.

Fabric and feel: a smooth blend with 5% spandex

The dress is 60% polyester, 35% viscose and 5% spandex. In the photos the fabric is matte and smooth and lies flat over the seams. The spandex is what lets a narrow dress like this move with you when you sit down or climb stairs.

The supplier gives no fabric weight and does not mention a lining.

Fit and silhouette: close to the body, below the knee

The table below is the maker's. Size S has a chest of 86 cm, a waist of 70 cm and hips of 96 cm. Each size up adds 4 cm to all three, ending at 98, 82 and 108 cm in XL. The length grows by a centimetre per size, from 108 to 111 cm.

With a fitted dress the largest part of you decides. Find the row where your chest, waist and hips all fit, and take that size even if one of the three has room to spare. The table does not say whether the numbers are measured on the dress or on the body.

Size chart (cm)

Size Length Hips Chest Waist
S 108 96 86 70
M 109 100 90 74
L 110 104 94 78
XL 111 108 98 82

Source: the maker's size table, the same for all three colours. It does not say whether these are garment or body measurements, so compare them with a dress that fits you.

Styling: one dress, three moods

The photos show the taupe dress with nude pumps and the blue and black ones with black heeled sandals. Nude shoes make the look softer, black ones sharper.

For the office, a blazer in a contrasting colour works well over the short sleeves. For a dinner, take the blazer off and add a pendant that sits just under the slit in the neckline. In colder months the dress goes with opaque tights and knee boots.

Occasions

The supplier names everyday wear and dressier outings. We think of a job interview, a presentation, a funeral or a formal lunch for the black one, and of a christening or a graduation for the blue and the taupe.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no care instructions, so go by the label sewn into the dress.

As a general habit, close the zip before washing and hang the dress to dry on a hanger, so the seams stay flat.

The wow detail: the small slit in the neckline

A boat neck can look severe. Here a short slit opens it at the centre, a few centimetres of skin in an otherwise closed front. It breaks the straight line and gives a necklace a place to sit.
