Short at the hem, covered at the arms. This mini dress with long sleeves by Moe has a deep square neckline, a seam right under the bust and sleeves that are gathered at the shoulder for a little volume.

The fabric is plain, with no print, and it comes in five colours. The maker's table puts the length at 86 cm in size S and 92 cm in XL, which is mid-thigh on the model in the photos.

Moe gives every colour its own model number, from 201634 for violet to 201638 for beige, and uses the same description and the same size table for all of them. So you choose a colour and nothing else changes.

The maker calls it a mini dress for special occasions, designed and sewn in Poland. The cut is neat. A horizontal seam sits under the bust, darts shape the skirt below it, and a covered zip closes the back. There is no lining; the maker describes the dress as lightweight.

The old title of this page spoke of a floral midi dress. That was wrong on both counts. The dress is plain and short, and we have corrected the page to match what the maker sends.

Who it's for

For you if you like your legs on show and your arms covered. That mix works well in the colder months, when a sleeveless party dress means a cardigan you did not want to wear.

The sizes run from S to XL. Chest goes from 88 cm to 103 cm and waist from 70 cm to 85 cm, in steps of five centimetres, so most people will find a clear match in the table.

Fabric and feel: polyester with 5% spandex

The composition is 95% polyester and 5% spandex. In the photos the fabric is matte and holds its shape: the skirt stands slightly away from the legs and the shoulders keep their puff.

The spandex gives some stretch across the back and the hips. Because the dress has no lining, the fabric lies directly on your skin and on your tights. With light colours such as beige, skin-tone underwear is the safe choice. The maker does not give a fabric weight, so we cannot tell you how thick it is in numbers.

Fit and silhouette: fitted on top, straight below

The top is close to the body and the seam under the bust marks the narrowest point. Below it the skirt falls in a gentle A-line that the darts keep tidy. Size M measures 93 cm at the chest, 75 cm at the waist and 101 cm at the hips, with a length of 88 cm.

The table does not say whether these are body or garment measurements. Lay a fitted dress you own flat, measure chest and waist, double the numbers and compare. And think about length: each size adds two centimetres, so on a tall frame the hem will sit higher than in the photos.

Styling: keep the neckline open

In the photos the dress is worn with pointed pumps and slingbacks, and with very little jewellery. That suits it. The square neckline frames the collarbones, and a short chain or small earrings are enough.

In winter, add sheer black tights and ankle boots to the black or the green one. The red and the violet can carry gold-tone shoes for a party. A long coat over a short dress looks good as long as the coat is clearly longer than the hem.

Occasions

The maker made it for special occasions. We see it at a birthday dinner, at Christmas drinks and on a date. The black and the beige also work at a reception, where bright red may be more than you want.

It is short, so think about how you will sit. For a long seated dinner, tights make life easier.

Care: follow the label

The maker's data has no washing instructions, so follow the label sewn into the dress.

Two general habits help with a dress like this. Close the zip before washing so it cannot catch on the fabric, and hang the dress on a hanger straight away so the gathered shoulders dry in shape.

The wow detail: the shoulder

The puff is small. The sleeve is gathered where it meets the shoulder and then runs slim down to the cuff. That little lift widens the shoulder line by a few centimetres, and next to it the waist looks narrower. You see it clearly in the back views in the gallery.
