A bent wood headphone stand in the shape of an omega

This headphone stand is one strip of bent plywood, curved into the shape of the Greek letter omega. Your over-ear headphones hang over the top curve, and the two feet keep the stand upright on a desk or a shelf.

It is about 25 cm high, 14 cm wide and 10 cm deep, and it comes in black or with a walnut-coloured wood finish. There is nothing to assemble. Headphones are not included.

The piece: one curve and no loose parts

The supplier describes the material as "solid wood plywood". In plain words that is plywood: thin layers of wood glued together and bent into shape, with a wood finish on the outside. On the walnut version you can see the paler layers along the edge, and we think that is the nicest part of it. The black version is black on the faces and on the edges.

It has no screws, no base plate and no cable clip. You take it out of the box and hang your headphones on it. We sell it without a brand, because the supplier data names no maker.

Who it's for

For you if your headphones usually end up on the desk, on the keyboard or on the arm of the sofa. A stand gives them one fixed place and keeps the ear pads off the table top.

It suits a home office, a gaming desk or a shelf next to the record player. The supplier says it holds over-ear headphones but gives no maximum headband width, so we can't promise a fit for every model. If yours are unusually wide, ask us first.

Materials and build: layers of wood, bent into a curve

Plywood is made of thin sheets of wood glued on top of each other. Bending it gives a curve without joints, which is why the stand is one piece from foot to foot. The supplier gives no detail about the wood species or the kind of finish, so we don't name them either.

Walnut is the name of the colour here. The photos show a brown wood grain on the faces and pale layers on the edges. The supplier gives no weight for the stand.

Size and dimensions: about 25 cm high

The stand is about 25 cm high, 14 cm wide and 10 cm deep. The supplier's dimension line is partly garbled, but the box size it gives, 26 x 15 x 11 cm, agrees with those figures.

A footprint of 14 by 10 cm fits beside a monitor or on a narrow shelf. Check the height of the spot you have in mind: you need the 25 cm of the stand plus some room above it to lift the headphones off.

Styling: on the desk or on a shelf

The walnut finish sits well next to other wood, like a desk top, a record cabinet or a bookshelf. The black one is quieter and goes with a dark desk setup, a black keyboard and a black monitor arm.

In the supplier's photo the headphones hang with the cable dropping down between the two legs. A wireless pair works just as well. Then the stand is simply where they rest between calls.

When you'll use it

It earns its place on a working day with a lot of calls: headphones on, headphones off, each time back on the stand. It is also a small gift for someone who has just set up a home office or bought new headphones. The headphones themselves are not part of the gift, so say that on the card.

Care: a soft dry cloth

The supplier gives no care instructions. As general practice for finished wood, dust it with a soft dry cloth and keep wet glasses and standing water away from it. Lift the headphones off instead of pulling them toward you, so the stand stays where it is.

The wow detail: the edge of the walnut version

Look at the walnut stand from the side and you see the layers: thin pale lines that follow the whole curve from one foot to the other. They show how the stand is made, and they make a plain object worth a second look. On the black version the edge is black too, so there you get the outline of the omega and nothing else.
