Summer Capsule Wardrobe: Build One That Works For You

A simple practical guide to putting together summer clothes you will actually wear, every week.

What a summer capsule wardrobe actually is

This is not a fixed list of items someone else decided you need. It is a small group of clothes that all work together, picked for your actual days, not someone else's online posts. You will not stand in front of your closet staring. You will not pack a full suitcase for a three day trip. You will reach for every single thing in it, almost every week.

You build it by first writing down all the things you actually do on a normal summer week. Walk the dog? Work at a desk? Eat outside? Go to birthday drinks? Every piece should work for at least two of those things. No one needs a top that only works for beach days unless you go to the beach four times every week.

You can test combinations before you buy anything using the Mix & Match Studio. You can also load things you already own into the Virtual Closet first, to see what gaps you actually have, instead of buying things you do not need.

Start with what you already own

Many people already have half of a good capsule, folded at the back of a drawer. Before you buy anything, pull every summer piece you own out onto the bed. Try each one on.

If you did not wear it last summer, set it aside. If you have to adjust it constantly when you wear it, set it aside. If you only put it on because you felt you should, not because you like how it feels, set it aside.

What is left is your starting point. Note what is missing. Not what everyone says you should have. What is missing for your days. If every single thing left is grey, you might want one top in a tone you like that goes with all of it. If all your bottoms only work with white tops, that is your gap.

5% of each sale goes to a cause you choose.

Pick pieces that play well together

Every piece you add should work with at least three other things you already have. That is the only rule. Not the colour, not the trend, not what anyone else is wearing.

If you are looking at a skirt, hold it up mentally against the tops you already own. Can you wear it with a t-shirt for the morning walk? With a blouse for work? With a cardigan for the evening? If it only works with one thing, do not add it.

You do not have to only wear neutral colours. You can have bright pieces. Just pick bright shades that go with most of what you already own. It does not have to be boring. It just has to work.

When you are looking at new pieces, you can try them on with your existing wardrobe virtually in the Avatar Studio before you order. You will find pre-vetted matching pieces in Mix & Match Wardrobe.

Plan for how summer actually feels

Summer is not just hot sunny days. It is cool mornings, rain showers, windy evenings on the patio, air conditioned offices.

Do not only buy thin sleeveless things. Include one light layer that you can throw over anything. One pair of closed shoes for days your feet are tired. One long skirt for when the wind picks up.

Check the fabric description on the product page where the maker gives it. Note how it will sit on your skin when it is warm. Washability matters too. Something you can only hand wash will not get worn very often, no matter how nice it looks. You can find good care notes in the Fabric care guide.

You will find suitable base pieces across Everyday Clothing and Timeless Dresses.

How many pieces do you need?

There is no magic number. Forget any number you saw online. The right number is however many pieces means you have something for every occasion, and nothing that you ignore.

For many people this lands somewhere between 12 and 25 pieces, not including shoes and small accessories. You can have less, you can have more. The point is that you use all of them.

As an example: a €40 top you wear 40 times costs €1 per wear. A €10 top you wear twice costs €5 per wear. You can check this for any piece you are considering, before you buy. That is the only calculation that matters.

Do not rush to fill every gap in one go. Add one piece each week, only when you notice you actually need it.

Adjust as you go

Your capsule is not a permanent list. It is a living thing. At the end of each month, note what you wore and what you did not.

If you have had a piece for six weeks and have not put it on once, move it on. Pass it to someone who will use it. Sell it. Do not keep it out of guilt. Do not keep it because it was supposed to be part of the capsule.

If you notice you are reaching for the same two tops every single day, you can add another one in the same cut and different shade. That is not failing. That is building something that works for you.

You can rearrange and test new combinations any time in your Virtual Closet. There is no finish line, no right version. This is just a system to make your days a little easier.

How giving works when you shop with us

5% of each sale goes to a cause you choose. After your order you pick one of three causes: CARE International, Cool Earth or Project Zero. The donation is paid out through PayPal Giving Fund UK. Those three causes, together with how we run our own store (honest product data, fair prices), are matched to 11 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

That is the heart of the 1% Movement: small choices × millions of us = change. It is a giving promise we can show you, and it is the only promise we make on this page.

Questions people ask

Do I have to throw away all my existing clothes to build this?

No. You start by keeping everything you already wear and like. You only remove the things that you never reach for, for whatever reason. You can add one new piece at a time, when you have a real gap. There is no deadline to finish.

Can I include bright colours or patterns?

Yes. There is no rule that says a capsule has to be plain or neutral. Only that every piece works with multiple other pieces you own. If you like floral prints, pick one print that goes with most of your solid pieces, and it will work just as well.

Is this only for people who travel a lot?

No. This works just as well for people who stay at home every day. It removes the morning decision stress, it keeps your closet tidy, and it means you never stand wondering what to wear. Travel is just one extra benefit.

What if my routine changes halfway through summer?

That is normal. Add or remove pieces as you need. This is a system to help you, not a set of rules you have to follow well. There is no penalty for changing it.
