This dog leash and collar set comes in a small brown and beige gingham, the kind of check you would expect on a shirt. The collar carries a matching bow tie, so your dog looks dressed for the occasion on an ordinary Tuesday walk.

The leash is 200 cm long and the set is made of polyester. It comes in sizes XS to XL.

The photos show three parts: a leash, a collar and a bow tie that sits on the collar. All three are covered in the same check, which the supplier calls coffee plaid. The inside of the collar is plain khaki webbing.

The leash ends in a silver-tone swivel clip, and the collar has a silver-tone buckle and ring. One photo shows the same set with gold-tone hardware. We sell it as "No brand"; the supplier gives no maker.

A note on sizing: the supplier lists XS to XL but gives no neck measurements. Before you order, measure your dog's neck and send us a message, and we will ask the supplier which size fits.

The option "new Coffee plaid" appears only in size L, and the supplier does not explain how it differs. Ask us if you want that one.

Materials: polyester and a clip

The supplier lists polyester and calls the set lightweight. The check looks woven into a shirt-like fabric that is stitched over the webbing. The supplier does not say what the clip and buckle are made of, and gives no weight limit, so we make no claim about how strong the set is. For a big dog that pulls, we would choose a tested walking harness and keep this for looking good.

Size: leash 200 cm, collar by size

The leash is 200 cm, which is on the long side and gives a small dog room to sniff around. The collar comes in XS, S, M, L and XL. Without neck measurements from the supplier we can't give you a table, so please measure and ask.

Styling: yes, for the dog

Brown gingham looks good on almost any coat colour. On a white or cream dog it stands out; on a brown or black dog it blends in like a tweed jacket. Turn the bow tie to the front for photos, or slide it to the side on a walk so it doesn't get in the way of the leash clip.

Christmas dinner, a wedding where the dog carries the rings, a birthday, the family photo, or the first walk with a new puppy.

Care: hand wash and air dry

The supplier gives no care instructions. As a general habit for fabric-covered leashes and collars: wash by hand in lukewarm water with a little mild soap, rinse, and let them air dry. Check the stitching and the clip now and then, as you would with any leash.

The wow detail: the bow tie

It is the bow tie, of course. A collar is a collar until there is a little gingham bow on it, and then strangers stop you in the street. It is a small, silly, happy thing, and that is reason enough.
