Online Fashion Store EU: Build a Wardrobe You Will Wear

Simple, practical guidance for shopping fashion and building a wardrobe that works for you every day.

Start with what you already own

Before you add anything new, lay out every item you currently wear. You do not need to sort everything in one evening. Set aside one hour, grab a clean bed sheet, and place every top, trouser, dress, jacket and shoe on it. This shows you gaps you actually have, not gaps adverts tell you you have. You will see that you already own three plain black tops, but no warm cardigan that fits over your work blazer. You will see you have 11 pairs of jeans but only one pair of shoes comfortable enough for full days walking. Once you do this, you only look for things that fill an actual empty space. You will not buy something almost identical to something you already forgot you had. You can log everything you own in our Virtual Closet to keep track, and plan outfits ahead. You can also browse our Mix & Match Wardrobe for pieces designed to work with common wardrobe basics.

Buy for fit first

Most clothes end up unworn not because they broke, but because they never fit right. You pull them on once, decide they are slightly too tight across the shoulders, or sit wrong when you sit down, and they hang at the back of the wardrobe forever. Never order something and hope it will stretch, or that you will adjust your body to fit it. That almost never works out. Check measurements properly, not just the size label. Every brand cuts differently. Even within the same shop, two items marked the same size can fit very differently. Use our Size calculator to check fit before you order. If something arrives and it does not sit right, return it. There is no shame in this. It is much better than wasting money on something you will never wear. You can also check fit on your own avatar on the product page.

Calculate cost per wear

This is the single most useful trick for shopping well. When you are considering an item, estimate how many times you will actually wear it over its life. Then divide the price by that number. For example: a €60 coat worn 60 times costs €1 per wear. A €20 top you wear twice costs €10 per wear. The coat is far better value, even though it costs more up front. This calculation cuts through sale hype. It stops you buying cheap things just because they are marked down. It will also change how you see more expensive pieces. You start asking 'will I wear this 100 times?' instead of 'is this cheap right now?'. You can try out different outfit combinations in the Mix & Match Studio to see how many ways a new piece will work with what you already own. Browse Everyday Clothing for pieces built for regular repeated wear.

Learn basic care

Clothes last much longer when you look after them properly. Most damage happens from washing, not wearing. Wash items only when they are actually dirty, not after every single wear. Turn things inside out before washing. Use the correct temperature marked on the label. Hang or fold items correctly the same day you take them off. Do not leave them crumpled on a chair. Learn to sew on a button, fix a loose hem, and darn a small hole. These skills take 10 minutes to learn and will helps it last of almost every item you own. None of this requires special equipment or lots of time. Small consistent habits make far more difference than any special product. We have a full Fabric care guide with simple step by step instructions for every common fabric.

Plan one season ahead

Don't shop for right now this week. Shop for what you will need in three months time. If it is the middle of summer, don't buy another summer top. Start looking for good jackets and knitwear before the cold weather arrives. This means you can take your time. You will not panic buy the first warm thing you see when it starts raining. You will not end up with something you don't actually like, bought in a hurry. You can also save up slowly for pieces you want, rather than buying cheaper alternatives that will not last. You can save items you are considering to a list, and come back to them after one week. Most of the time, you will no longer want them. Browse Lucy's Picks for simple, versatile pieces that work across multiple seasons.

Pause before you buy

Before you press confirm on any order, pause for one full minute. Ask yourself these three questions:

  • Do I already own something that does this job?
  • Will I wear this at least 12 times in the next 12 months?
  • Would I still buy this if it was not on sale?

If the answer to any of these is no, close the tab. This one minute pause stops almost all regret purchases. You will still buy things you love. You will just stop buying things you will forget about by next month. 5% of each sale goes to a cause you choose.

How giving works when you shop with us

5% of each sale goes to a cause you choose. After your order you pick one of three causes: CARE International, Cool Earth or Project Zero. The donation is paid out through PayPal Giving Fund UK. Those three causes, together with how we run our own store (honest product data, fair prices), are matched to 11 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

That is the heart of the 1% Movement: small choices × millions of us = change. It is a giving promise we can show you, and it is the only promise we make on this page.
